There are lots of people that have been able to quite their 9-5 jobs and have gone into blogging full time. Bloggers like Linda Ikeji, Bella Naija etc. have made millions through blogging. This been said, there are thousands of people that have tried blogging but only few have really make something reasonable out of it.

    How To Start A Blog

So if you passionate about starting a blog and growing it to match up to the likes of Linda Ikeji blog then these are the steps you should consider taking.

    1 Pick A Niche
One of the reasons why most people fail when it comes to blogging is that they want to blog about everything. Only few websites have succeeded using this method. The other mistake people make is blogging about things they know little or nothing about. When you want to start a blog, you should blog about something you enjoy.

For example “if you love football (we all love football), you can start a blog around that niche, or if you love fashion like me, you can create your blog around fashion. There are other good niches you can blog about which includes Fitness, Health, Tech, Tourism, relationship etc.

    2 Select A Platform
Look at it this way, if you want to sleep, you need a bed same goes for blogging. For you to blog successfully, you need a platform. I consider WordPress to be the best platform to use when it comes to blogging but there are some other platforms that can serve as alternative to WordPress which include blogger.com, wix.com tumblr etc. This platform makes it possible for you to post your contents so people can read it online.

Unlike wordpress that requires a domain and hosting to work, this alternative platforms comes with a free hosting and domain from the platform example www.yourname.blogspot.com but I advise if you going to use this platform you should consider purchasing a custom domain.

    3 Get A Domain Name
A domain name is the web address people will put in the search bar to get to your website. For example www.iamgungry.com is a domain name. Domain name is very important for the success of any blog; it is advisable that you make your domain name short but related to your niche.

When it comes to domain names using a .com, .com.ng, .net is more preferable as they rank very well on search engines. There are websites where you can register your domain which includes hostnownow.com, whogohost.com, web4africa.ng etc.

    4 Choose A Hosting Plan
If you interested in using WordPress which I consider to be the best, you will need a hosting plan to get started. Websites such as hostnownow.com,

www.whogohost.com, www.web4africa.ng etc. also provide great hosting plans and they are not that expensive. With as little as ₦7,000 per year you can get a hosting plan with a domain name.

    5 Customize Your Site
Once you have purchased a domain and hosting plan, you can then install wordpress and customize it using a theme of your choice. When your website is hosted, your hosting company will provide you with a Cpanel which you will use to configure your website.

Through the Cpanel you can easily install wordpress. Once you have successfully installed wordpress, you can start customizing your website by first uploading a theme. There are lots of themes to choose from just head over to wordpress.org and click on the themes menu and download any theme you want. I will not be able to give you step by step guide on how to customize your wordpress on this article but you can go to YouTube and watch videos on how to do that.

    6 Install Plugins
If you are using wordpress you will need to install plugins which will help your website run faster. Plugins such as SEO by Yoast, AMP, Google Analytics etc. are must have when using wordpress.

    7 Post Contents

A website without contents is like a house that is empty. When you have setup you website, you should post contents related to the niche you have chosen. When we talk about content, it must be something that adds value to people’s life.

There are two ways of writing contents its either you write it yourself which can sometimes be stressful if you have a job to run to every morning or hire a freelancer to do it for you at a cost. Website like Fiverr.com provides you will such people.

    8 Do SEO
Making search engines such as Google, Yahoo etc. to be aware of your website is crucial. This will allow them drive organic traffic to your website when someone search for a keyword related to your niche. Using Google Webmaster tools to check the keywords you would rank on search engine is vital

    9 Get Social
You cannot just sit down and wait for people to come to your blog, you have to go out there and make them aware of your blog. There are lots of social platforms you can use such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest etc. sharing your contents to forums is a great way to get traffic to your website. Forums likes Nairaland.com, Jackobian.com etc. are great Nigerian forums to drive traffic to your website.

    10 Monetize Your Contents
When it comes to making money with your blog, there are certain measures you need to put in place for this to be possible. This includes leveraging different source which includes

    i) Display ads: this are advertisements are display on your website that when people click on them you get paid for it. Google Adsense, propellerads, bidvertiser, media.net etc. are good platforms to get display ads.
ii)Affiliate Marketing: putting products from other sites such as Amazon, jumia, konga etc. which when someone makes a purchase using the link on your website, you get a commission.

With this methods I have highlighted, you can start a blog and remember what I said earlier you have to have passion for what you doing, be patient and consistent for you to succeed as a blogger.
